Vietnam is Passing a New Cyber Law that Could Possibly Make it's Way to the United States During the Trump Administration! Be Very Aware!
Vietnam and the United States have come a long way since the Vietnam War. From Operation Homecoming in 1973 to the present mutual economic and security relationship, the two countries have put many of their differences behind them. The world has realized that the two currently have lasted on really good terms, but recently, Vietnam has agreed to bring into affect a new law that will store its local Facebook and Google users' personal information in local offices in Vietnam and apply a censor to all messages posted by its citizens. By this law passing, the two businesses will have to violate their own policy of protecting their customer's privacy in order to do online business in Vietnam. Vietnam has been affected by many negative economical posts that has cost them financially and reputably by its activists and Vietnam wants to put an end to this madness. If this solution strikes gold, America may jump on board.
The law is suppose to go into effect on January of 2019. Over the years of Facebook and Google services in Vietnam - with their public popularity throughout the masses - the world is watching for new occurences deriving from the people of Vietnam as this country is always filled with eye-opening events worth reading about. Activists, journalists, your everyday citizens all have a voice and many aren't always talking about the glitz and glamour of Vietnam.
Freedom of speech is suppose to be solid in Vietnam, but with this new cyber law passing in January, a limitation is clamped and not too many people are happy about it. The human rights group, Amnesty International call this a "devastating blow". The Asian Internet Coalition says that this move can hinder the growth of a digital economy. I'm sure activists aren't too happy about this law either, because now messages that they'd like to get out about their opinions of Vietnam will be censored, disallowing them to let the world know the suffering that they're experiencing within. With this censor, a damper on worldly support for many country struggles can factor in unfortunately, especially if the rest of the world are in the dark about rough Vietnam matters. Many are struck hard by the limitation, reassuring online rumors that Vietnam isn't quite the country that practices freedom of speech.
Too many activists are getting arrested in Vietnam. Their charges of conducting propoganda against the state and trying to overthrow the government are serious issues. Nguyen Van Dai, a founder of the Brotherhood of Democracy was arrested, charged with anti-state propoganda and then upgraded to trying to overthrow the government. Nguyen Viet Dang was arrested for conducting propoganda against the state. Hoang Duc Binh was charged with abusing democratic freedom to infringe on the interests of the state, organization and people. Throughout the web, you will find many activists' cases related to attempting to over-throw Vietnam due to their fight for democracy or due to an occurence of their disagreement with the communist country and how authorities handle its citizens' human rights. Hundreds and hundreds of activists are getting arrested for just taking a stand, not due to violent acts, but just for speaking up and drawing enough attention which makes it to social media and in turn, to many other parts of the world. So many cases, it seems, which puts a bad view on the country by the public, causing an impact on the Vietnam economy.
The cyber giants, Google and Facebook will collect important personal information from those using their services within Vietnam. If the user posts messages that can cause economic harm in any way shape or form, Google or Facebook would send a warning to remove the post. If the post isn't removed, the two giants will proceed with a more severe approach.
The United States of America isn't strangers to activists. Donald Trump is the source of many protests since his tenor which does put a huge disadvantage on the economy of the United States. While millions and millions of negative tweets in regards to how Trump runs America, many international citizens are afraid to enter into the United States; as white supremacy, racism, police brutality. bigotry, just to name a few, are alive and well in the United States. What tourist wants to visit a country of such hateful representation? If the United States was to adopt this cyber law and prevent much of its transparency from the rest of the world, how would tourists feel when entering the country after never reading social media posts that were based on what the activists had to say? What if all of the posts were just controlled by the government and our online freedom of speech and of the press were taken from us? A new set of activists would result - most likely - and the rest of the world may never know a thing about these new set of activists - or the details of . Scary! What happened to them? [we may wonder as outsiders, but may never know] As America have had many cases of illegal authority murders on citizens, it is more common in Vietnam. Social media plays a huge part in the prevention of such brutality.
It seems as though Vietnam wants to continue to run their one-party government without any interruptions from the rest of the world. To each his own, but this law just says that a country is stripping its citizen's freedom of speech away from them, which looks really bad as a country. You apply a harsh law to combat your activists, way to go Vietnam! Let's see how well this goes for you! America is taking notes!
